The Imitation Game
Rating 7 out of 10
This movie has been out for a while. I had seen several good reviews on it and talked to a couple people that liked and recommended it. It looked like it might be good but also seemed like it might drift off to boring history type movie watching. I was right on both counts.
This movie is based on the true story of Alan Turing. He was a crazy English genius that back in World War II was brought in to try to break the evil Germans code box called Enigma. It was deemed impossible to break as there were literally a bazillion different combinations and it was changed daily. So you would have less than 24 hours to break the code then it starts all over again.
When Turing was brought in the Germans were winning the war and regularly bombing downtown London. On thing that was greatly helping them at the time was their ability to communicate via the Enigma machine and give out their marching orders. By breaking the code they were able to know where the Germans would strike and when. The problem was after they broke the code was then knowing how/when to use it. If they used it all the time the Germans would know the code was broken and change it making them start all over again. So they had to know that attacks were coming and do nothing.
There is a side story of During being homosexual which at the time in England is a criminal offense punishable by prison or worse (chemical castration). Benedict Cumberbatch is fantastic and deserves his Oscar nomination.
This movie moves at a slow pace from time to time and is not for everyone. I liked it and was entertained.
