Jack the Giant Slayer
Rating 7 out of 10
What we have he is an interesting take on the old tale of Jack and the Beanstalk we all heard as a kid. This is a movie that never would have worked 5-6 years ago before CGI became so good. The effects in Jack is very good. It's not Avatar but still pretty good.
Jack is a poor boy that growing up in a small village hears the bedtime story over and over of the great King many years before that stood up to the mighty giants before cutting down the tall beanstalk that provides a gateway between the two worlds. He hides the remaining magic beans and the village lives in peace long after his death. Many years later young Jack is older now (floppy haired Nicolas Hoult) and has a crush on the disgruntled Princess Isabelle (Eleanor Tomlinson) when he stumbles on the last of the magic beans. The two worlds unite and Jack has to save the Princess.
Not a huge plot here. The movie is the effects and as I said they are pretty good. I enjoyed this movie. I need to add that Jack in the Beanstalk was a kids book. This is most definitely NOT a kids movie. Not little kids anyway. I believe it has a PG-13 rating. The giants are pretty scary (for kids) and they like to eat humans. The eating is not shown but you now what is going on. A lady at my showing brought her two small kids and left after about thirty minutes.
I have to tell the story of me seeing this movie. I was in Savannah on business by myself when I saw this. My iPhone said it was playing at 7p and gave me directions to the theater. It didn't tell me that not only was it in 3D ( you know I don't care for 3D movies!) but it was on the IMAX screen too. I asked for one ticket and my usual medium diet coke. The lady looked at me with a straight face and said that will be $25 please! I looked around shocked wondering if I was paying for a small family to see the movie with me. Nope. TWENTY BUCKS for the ticket and five dollars for a medium drink! Wow! Surely there is a way I can write that off as a business expense, right?
Anyway, I would say if you watch the trailer and it looks like something you'd want to see you will mostly likely enjoy it. It liked it.
Nice review Royce. It’s a bit dumb and silly, but that’s all of the fun with this movie and that’s all that mattered to me when I was watching this.
